Sandakan and Beyond
10 March to 20 March 2019 : 11 Days, 10 Nights
$2920 share twin | Domestic Borneo flight included
We travel to Borneo to explore Australia’s Second World War connections in Sabah, Labuan Island and Sarawak. The infamous Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp and Death March with the deliberate massacre of Allied PoWs (mostly Australian) brings us to start our tour in Sandakan to visit sites with expert guidance and commentary. There is also an opportunity to visit the famed orangutans at Sepilok Rehabilitation Sanctuary. Then we travel on, following the route of the PoW Death March to the Ranau area, visiting all camp locations (three) near Ranau. From Ranau we widen our exploration of Borneo for both wartime history and present day features.
The tour is by vehicle with some walking to inspect sites. The PoW parts of the tour programme are made complete by the examination of the Sandakan tragedy : both in the commentary and explanation, and the sites visited which includes Labuan Island and Batu Lintang PoW Camp Kuching in Sarawak with their parts of the story.
We follow the Australian amphibious landing on Labuan Island and the follow up landings on British North Borneo (Sabah), liberating both Labuan and the main island from the Japanese occupation as part of the Oboe Operations. And the liberation of Sarawak by Australian Forces.
Amongst the war history we take the opportunity to visit an orang utan sanctuary, ride a small narrow gauge jungle railway, and visit a world class botanical centre. We will experience the beauty and friendliness of Borneo, and pay respects to the past.
